You’ve done the work. You’ve put in the hours at the range, you’ve practiced your draws, and you’ve mentally rehearsed the scenarios a thousand times. But there is one scenario that many responsible gun owners overlook: the "second fight."
The first fight is the physical one, the moment you have to defend your life or the life of a loved one against an attacker. The second fight is the legal one. It begins the moment the threat stops and the sirens start to wail. Navigating the legal aftermath of a defensive shooting in New York can feel like an uphill battle, but knowing exactly what to say (and what not to say) is the key to surviving the courtroom just as you survived the street.
At C&G Solutions, we don’t just teach you how to put holes in paper. We provide Real-World Training that prepares you for the gravity of the responsibility you carry. Whether you are taking our NYS 18-hour Concealed Carry Course or working with us on private coaching, understanding Article 35 of the NY Penal Law is just as crucial as your marksmanship.
When your heart is pounding at 160 beats per minute and your body is flooded with cortisol and adrenaline, you are biologically incapable of being a perfect witness. You may experience "auditory exclusion" (not hearing shots) or "tunnel vision." You might get the timeline of events completely wrong.
Most people think that the best thing to do is to explain every detail to the police to show they were "the good guy." This is a mistake. In your state of shock, a small verbal slip-up can become a massive liability later. This is why we stress a disciplined, professional approach to interacting with law enforcement.

In the eyes of the law and the responding officers, the person who calls 911 is often viewed as the victim/complainant. If a witness or the attacker’s associate calls first, you are already starting from a position of suspicion.
When you call 911, keep it short, factual, and focused on medical needs:
Do not get into a debate with the dispatcher. Do not try to justify your actions over the phone. Every word is being recorded and will be played back in front of a jury.
When the police arrive, they are entering a high-stress, "unknown" situation. They don’t know who the "good guy" is. Your job is to make it incredibly easy for them to see you are not a threat.

Once the scene is secure and an officer asks you what happened, you need a disciplined script. At C\&G Solutions, we teach the 5-Point Statement. This provides enough information to assist the investigation without handing over a poorly phrased confession.
In New York, the law regarding the use of force is found in Article 35. It’s a complex piece of legislation that requires you to understand concepts like "duty to retreat" (if safe to do so) and "reasonable belief."
Many instructors just glaze over the law. We don't. In our firearm safety course NYC, we dive deep into these legal hurdles. We want you to feel empowered by knowledge, not paralyzed by fear of the legal system. Knowing the law allows you to act with confidence because you know exactly where the line is drawn.

A defensive shooting usually results in a medical emergency. Once the threat is neutralized, your responsibility shifts. Do you have a kit? Do you know how to stop the bleed?
We often see students focus so much on the "press to the rear" of the trigger that they forget what happens after the shot. Our Citizen First Responder course is designed to give you the skills to manage a trauma scene until EMS arrives. Showing that you attempted to provide or call for medical aid can also speak volumes about your intent and character in a legal setting.
The best way to handle the aftermath of a shooting is to have a solid foundation of training before it ever happens. When you stand before a judge or a grand jury, being able to point to professional, documented training from C&G Solutions shows that you are a responsible, safety-conscious citizen, not a "cowboy."
Our instructors, including Chris Goemans, bring 30+ years of experience in EMS, teaching, and security to every session. We provide a judgment-free zone where you can ask the hard questions and get straight answers.

Defending yourself is a right, but doing it correctly is a skill that must be nurtured. Don't wait until you're in the middle of a legal maze to realize you should have prepared for the "second fight."
