NYC CCW 18-Hour Class

The NYC CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) 18-Hour Course is a state-mandated training program for individuals applying for a concealed carry permit in New York City and throughout New York State. This course fulfills the training requirements under the New York State Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA) and consists of 16 hours of classroom instruction plus 2 hours of live-fire training.

Course Breakdown

1. Classroom Instruction (16 Hours)

The classroom portion covers a wide range of topics critical to responsible firearm ownership and legal compliance, including but not limited to:

  • Firearm Safety Rules: Understanding the fundamental principles of safe handling, storage, and transportation of firearms.
  • Firearm Function and Operation: Overview of different firearm types, mechanics, loading/unloading procedures, and maintenance.
  • Legal Aspects of Concealed Carry:
    • New York State and Federal firearm laws
    • Justifiable use of force and deadly force laws
    • Self-defense considerations
    • Restricted areas where carrying is prohibited
  • Situational Awareness and De-escalation: Training on how to assess threats, avoid confrontations, and use verbal de-escalation tactics to prevent violent encounters.
  • Conflict Management and Decision-Making: Evaluating real-world scenarios where force may or may not be justified.
  • Basic Marksmanship and Shooting Fundamentals: Grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, and breath control for accurate shooting.
  • Concealed Carry Best Practices:
    • Holster selection and proper carry techniques
    • Drawing from concealment
    • Retention and securing your firearm
  • Firearm Storage and Child Safety: Safe storage methods to prevent unauthorized access, including NYS compliance requirements.

2. Live-Fire Training & Qualification (2 Hours)

The live-fire portion includes:

  • Shooting Qualification: Demonstrating safe firearm handling and proficiency under instructor supervision.
  • Live-Fire Drills: Practicing marksmanship, trigger discipline, recoil management, and engaging targets at various distances.
  • Decision-Making Under Stress: Training to shoot under pressure while maintaining accuracy and safety.

Course Completion & Certification

Upon successful completion of the 18-hour training, participants will receive a certificate of completion, which is required for submission with their NYC CCW permit application.
