Navigating the NYS 18-Hour Course: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Navigating the NYS 18-Hour Course: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Navigating the landscape of New York firearm laws can feel like walking through a maze in the dark. Between the changing legislation and the administrative hurdles, it’s easy to feel like the state is throwing up roadblocks at every turn. If you’re a concerned citizen just looking to protect your family and exercise your Second Amendment rights, the sheer volume of requirements for a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license can feel like an uphill battle.

At C\&G Solutions, we’ve seen the frustration firsthand. We know you aren't looking to become a tactical commando; you just want the peace of mind that comes with being prepared. That’s why we’ve structured our NYS 18-Hour Concealed Carry Course to be more than just a box to check for the permit office. We want this to be an empowering journey where your confidence grows alongside your skill set.

Based at Mariners Cove, 3615 Oceanside Road, Oceanside, NY, brings over 130 years of experience in Police work, EMS, teaching, and security to the table. We’re here to help you navigate this process with a judgment-free, professional approach.

The 16-Hour Classroom Deep Dive: More Than Just Law

Most people think sitting in a classroom for 16 hours sounds about as exciting as watching paint dry. I get it. But when it comes to carrying a firearm in New York, what you don't know can land you in serious legal trouble. We break these 16 hours down into digestible, actionable modules that focus on real-world scenarios rather than just reciting statutes.

Understanding the Legal Maze

New York State laws regarding the "justifiable use of force" are strict. We spend a significant amount of time discussing Article 35 of the NYS Penal Law. You need to know exactly when you are legally allowed to use a firearm and, perhaps more importantly, when you aren't. We talk about "duty to retreat," the "castle doctrine" (as it applies in NY), and the legal aftermath of a defensive encounter. These are the "costly mistakes" we want to help you avoid.

Situational Awareness and Conflict De-escalation

The best gunfight is the one you never get into. We teach you how to spot threats before they materialize and how to use verbal and non-verbal strategies to manage confrontations. Understanding threat recognition and conflict avoidance is a crucial responsibility of every CCW holder.

Firearm Safety and Maintenance

Whether you’ve been around guns your whole life or you’re holding one for the first time, safety is the foundation. We cover safe handling practices, firearm function, and how to properly clean and maintain your tool. We also dive into holster considerations, because how you carry is just as important as what you carry.

Sensitive Locations and Compliance

New York has specific "Gun Free Zones" and sensitive locations where carrying is prohibited. Knowing where you can and cannot go is vital to staying compliant. We help you understand these boundaries so you can move through your daily life with confidence.

The 2-Hour Live-Fire Range Training: Where Skill Meets Steel

After the classroom theory comes the practical application. This is where the rubber meets the road. We move to the range for two hours of supervised live-fire training. If you’re feeling nervous about this part, don’t be. Our instructors are there to support you, not drill-sergeant you.

Marksmanship Fundamentals

We focus on the "Big Six" of marksmanship: stance, grip, sight alignment, sight picture, breathing, and trigger control. When it comes to the trigger, we don’t "squeeze." Squeezing involves your whole hand and can pull your shots off target. Instead, we teach you to apply a smooth, steady press to the rear. This minor distinction in language and technique makes a massive difference in your accuracy.

Proficiency Drills

During these two hours, you’ll demonstrate:

  • Safe loading and unloading.
  • Proper drawing and re-holstering.
  • Target acquisition.
  • Firearm condition checks.

The goal is to ensure you can safely discharge the firearm under controlled conditions while maintaining total control of the weapon at all times.

The Written Exam and Proficiency Test: Crossing the Finish Line

To successfully complete the course, there are two benchmarks you need to hit.

  1. The Written Exam: You’ll take a test covering the curriculum from the classroom portion. You need a minimum score of 80% to pass. Don't sweat it, if you pay attention and participate in the discussions, you’ll have all the information you need.
  2. The Live-Fire Proficiency Assessment: New York State requires you to achieve a minimum score of 80% on the range. This typically involves firing at a specific target at a distance of 12 feet.

Passing these isn’t just about getting a certificate; it’s about proving to yourself that you have the knowledge and the skill to carry a firearm responsibly.

Tips for Preparation: How to Show Up Ready

You don’t need to be an expert to show up, but being prepared will make your experience much smoother.

  • Mindset over Gear: You don't need the fanciest equipment to start. In fact, we often recommend waiting to buy gear until after the class so you can learn what actually works.
  • Documentation: Bring your government-issued ID. If you already have a premise permit or any relevant paperwork, bring that too.
  • Dress for Success: Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Avoid low-cut shirts (hot brass and skin don't mix).
  • Note-Taking: We provide a lot of info. Bring a pad and pen. Your future self will thank you when you’re trying to remember a specific legal point three months from now.
  • The "Bring a Friend" Offer: The CCW process is always better with a partner. If you bring a friend to the course, we offer a $50 discount. Just make sure you mention your friend’s name in the comment section during registration to receive the discount.
